Flushing of the face, an unsightly bump or broken capillaries, are all common reactions. These and other symptoms may have triggered our sensitivity alarm, causing us to assume that we have sensitive skin.

And outside of having sensitive skin naturally, a basic allergic reaction may have also been the culprit. Allergic reactions yield similar symptoms as sensitive skin.

Either way, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to keep your skin safe when trying new products.

Below are a few simple steps you can take to handle any sensitivity issues that may come your way.

Do a patch test

We know you’ve heard this before, but how many of us actually do it? Patch tests are recommended for most skin care products though many people fail to utilize them. So even if your not known to have extreme reactions to products, its important to test your skin first to avoid a bad experience later on down the line.

A patch test can be just as simple as applying a trial size amount of the product in a low-visibility place, such as behind your ear or any other place you think won’t receive much attention. Wait for roughly a day or so to see if any negative reactions have taken place. Signs of a bad reaction are itching, puffiness or redness at the test site.

Cleanse right

Even though a nice splash of hot water can be great for opening up your pores, if your skin is prone to bad reactions you’ll want to turn the degree down a notch when cleansing. Utilize lukewarm water instead of hot for your wash routine. Also incorporate a nice mild cleanser, such as one made from milk or other specialty ingredients to remove filth and dirt build up. After washing rinse with water or wipe with a damp cloth.

Moisturize your skin

A very important and often neglected step in proper skin care is moisturizing on the regular basis.

Find a moisturizer that is geared towards sensitive skin types. Preferably select one that contains calming elements such as lavender and horse chestnut. Likewise, choose a cream that is also a sun protectant with an SPF of at least 15.

Gently exfoliate

Finally, it’s also recommended to properly exfoliate your skin if you believe you are prone to reactions.

Instead of using popular coarse or heavy-duty exfoliators, purchase a vitamin e cream exfoliator instead. This type of facial scrub still provides the texture needed for a good scrubbing but is lighter and easier on the skin than the harsher ones mentioned.

And though there are many other tips and tricks to be mentioned for sensitive skin types, these are the most basic and essential ones needed to manage this condition. So there you have it, and a happy cleansing to you!
